Concessions and Government energy discounts

If you currently hold an eligible concession card, you may be able to claim concessions on your energy bills.

To apply for concessional rebates, you must be the Decision Maker or Primary Account Holder on your Tango Energy account.

To find out if you are eligible for government concessions or rebates, please review the information on your state of residence below:

 

Victoria

The eligible concession cards in Victoria include:

  • Pensioner concession cards issued by Centrelink or the Department of Veterans Affairs
  • Health Care Card issued by Centrelink
  • Department of Veterans Affairs Gold Repatriation Health Cards

Annual Electricity Concession

Approximately 17.5% for usage and supply charge which is applied to bills throughout the year and is calculated after any retailer discounts and solar credits have been deducted.

This concession is capped and once the cap has been reached, we will send you an application form for the Excess Electricity Concession.

Excess Electricity Concession

If your main electricity usage and supply charge is above the $2973.00 for the year, you may be eligible for the Excess Electricity Concession. Please note this is amount is reviewed each year.

Winter Gas Concession

Approximately 17.5% for energy usage and supply charges. This concession only applies to Residential households from the 1st of May to the 31st of October each year.

Life Support Concession

The Life Support Concession assists customers who require the use of specific machines in their homes.

If you or someone in your household uses a life support machine or any other type of machine prescribed by a doctor, we encourage you to complete the application form to ensure that we can apply for the concession for your account.

The Electricity discount is equal to the cost of 1,880 kilowatt hours of power used per year or 420 kilowatt hours per quarter.

Approved machines are:

  • Intermittent peritoneal dialysis machine
  • Oxygen concentrators
  • Hemodialysis machine

Applications for other machines must be approved by the Department of Health and Human Services. (DHHS). Most continuous positive airways pressure (CPAP) machines do not meet 1,880 kilowatt hour threshold.

Medical Cooling Concession

Approximately 17.5% for electricity bills from the 1st of November to the 30th of April each year.  

Qualifying medical conditions include:

  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Lymphedema
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Post-polio syndrome/Poliomyelitis
  • Motor Neuron Disease

Utility Relief Grant Scheme (URGS)

This provides grants to eligible concession cardholders and low-income households. The amount of the grant is based on the amount you owe at the time of application.

A maximum of $650 on each utility (electricity and gas) in a two-year period or $1,300 with single fuel (electricity only).

If you hold an eligible concession card (or form part of a low-income household) and are experiencing temporary difficulty paying your bills, you may be eligible for the URGS grant.

New South Wales

If you hold a New South Wales government-issued concession card or you are a life support customer, you may be eligible to access help managing your energy use and paying your bills.

If you’re eligible, you may be able to claim more than one rebate. Support includes rebates on your gas and electricity bills.

Low Income Household Rebate

A rebate of up to $285.00 per year excluding GST. If you are eligible for this rebate, you can also receive a rebate for your gas supply at the same address.

The concession is calculated as a flat rate per day and is indexed each financial year.

Family Energy Rebate

This is available to households with dependent children and receives a Family Tax Benefit payment from the Commonwealth Department of Human Services. It is only paid once per financial year.

The rebate:

  • $180 (ex GST) per year annual payment, if you do not hold the Department of Human Services Concession or Health Care Card.

If you also receive the Low Income Household Rebate, this annual payment may vary.

Energy Accounts Payment Assistance Scheme (EAPA)

The EAPA scheme exists to assist customers who are experiencing short-term financial crisis.

The vouchers value up to $400 excluding GST. per annum 

This scheme is not an ongoing benefit and vouchers are issued by community welfare organizations such as the Salvation Army, Anglicare and St Vincent de Paul.

Apply online

  1. Check the eligibility requirements.
  2. Select the 'Apply online' button.
  3. Log in, or create your MyServiceNSW Account.
  4. Follow the prompts to submit your application.

After applying online:

  1. You will receive an email confirming your application.
  2. A NSW Government representative will call you within 2 to 4 weeks to assess your eligibility for EAPA vouchers. The assessment may involve a 3-way call with your energy retailer, including discussing energy hardship plans and further assistance.

Apply Through a non-government EAPA provider

You can apply to be assessed for EAPA vouchers by calling an approved non-government EAPA provider such as Anglicare, Salvation Army and Wesley Mission.

Contacting an EAPA provider may be more suitable, if you:

  • Prefer an in-person assessment (offered by some providers)
  • Don’t have an email address
  • Need other support, such as no-interest loans, financial counselling, and clothing or food assistance.

Medical Energy Rebate

The Medical Energy Rebate is up to $285.00 (excluding GST) a year. You may be able to claim this rebate if you or someone in your household has an inability to self-regulate their body temperature.

Seniors Energy Rebate

To be eligible for this rebate, you must:

  • Reside in New South Wales
  • Hold a valid Commonwealth Seniors Health Care Card (CSHC) from Centrelink or the Departments of Veterans Affairs (DVA)
  • Be the Decision Maker/Primary Account Holder on the Tango Energy account
  • Apply for the rebate for your primary residence (not a holiday home or investment property)

Applications must be submitted directly to the Department using the form from the New South Wales Government website.

Payment of this Rebate will be paid directly to eligible customers by the Department, and not included on your energy bills.

The rebate is up to $200.00 per household, per financial year and if the application is successful, it will be paid directly into your bank or credit union account.

South Australia

Energy Bill Concession

This is available for eligible customers on low or fixed incomes and the energy concession includes both electricity and gas payments as well as LPG bottled gas.

Emergency Electricity Payment Scheme (EEPS)

This is an emergency payment that can help you pay for an electricity debt if you are in financial hardship and have been or are at risk of being disconnected. You can apply for EEPS once every two years. It needs to be accessed through financial counsellors who will make an assessment based on your circumstances before the application can be made.

Medical Heating and Cooling Concession

The Medical heating and cooling concession assist customers who are on a fixed or low income and who have a clinically verified medical condition that requires frequent use of heating and/or cooling in the home to prevent the severe worsening of their condition.

Cost of Living Concession

This energy concession assists customers on low or fixed incomes with cost-of-living expenses. This includes council rates, energy, and medical bills.

Dialysis Life Support Concession

If you or someone in your household requires dialysis treatment at home, you can speak with the renal unit to see if they are eligible for a dialysis life support concession.

Queensland

Queensland Government Cost of Living Rebate

Queensland households are receiving a $175 Cost of Living Rebate on their upcoming electricity bills.

You don't have to apply for it. The rebate will be automatically credited to eligible customers' accounts from 31 August 2022 and will appear on residential customers' bills depending on individual billing cycles.

Eligibility criteria

  • The rebate is being provided to every Queensland household that is separately charged for their electricity supply/consumption.
  • The rebate is in addition to any energy rebates and concessions you may be eligible for.

Electricity and Gas Rebates

Rebate is $340.85 for electricity and $76.19 for gas including GST per year. Note, that this may vary yearly dependent on government legislation.

Eligible pensioners and seniors may be able to apply for these rebates.

Electricity Life Support

This concession is provided by the Queensland Government for eligible customers who are seriously ill and/or use an at-home oxygen concentrator or kidney dialysis machine which contributes to the electricity cost of running these machines.

Home Energy Emergency Assistance Scheme (HEEAS)

The Home Energy Emergency Assistance Scheme is for Queensland residents who are unable to pay for their electricity and gas bills due to a short-term financial crisis or an unforeseen emergency.

This scheme provides a once-off emergency assistance payment every two years.

To be eligible, you must be the Primary Account Holder on the Tango Energy account and meet one of the following requirements:

  • Hold a current Government Issued concession card
  • Have an income equal to or less than the Australian Government’s maximum income rate for part age pensioners
  • Be part of the hardship program or on a payment plan
